Technology progression guide
Bellwright Research Priority Order Guide
The best Bellwright research order is survival support first, settlement reliability second, equipment progression third, and remote logistics last. Research the technology your settlement can use immediately, not the most impressive unlock visible in the tree.
Short answer: stabilize food and storage, remove the current production bottleneck, unlock the equipment needed for the next objective, then invest in specialist and outpost systems.
A dependable research order
1. Food and daily survival
Prioritize unlocks that make food collection, preparation, storage, or worker support more reliable. A technology that reduces a daily manual task creates time for quests, recruitment, and exploration.
Do not add a complex food chain before the settlement can move its current ingredients and outputs. Use the food and cooking guide to identify the actual missing step.
2. Storage and basic logistics
Research that improves storage or material handling helps every later chain. Production cannot scale when inputs are scattered, outputs have no destination, or workers spend most of the day hauling.
This stage should leave the settlement with clear storage roles and stable stock targets. The storage and production guide provides the audit.
3. Tools and core production
Choose the tool or workstation that solves a current shortage. Confirm the raw input, worker, fuel, and output destination before completing the research.
An unlock is not productive by itself. It creates a new demand chain that the settlement must support.
4. Combat equipment for the next objective
Upgrade combat capability when the current objective requires it. Prepare the entire group rather than spending all resources on one exceptional item while the rest of the force remains under-equipped.
5. Specialist technologies
Some technologies require profession expertise. Donkey Crew's official Villagers overview confirms that professions are tied to attributes and can be required for technology progression.
Before choosing a specialist branch, verify:
- the required profession shown in the current research interface;
- whether an eligible villager can be recruited;
- housing and food capacity for that recruit;
- materials needed by the unlocked chain;
- a real use for the output.
6. Outposts, caravans, and wider logistics
Remote systems become valuable when distance is a recurring cost. The Small Caravan Station supports carts and rules-based routes between outposts and friendly villages, but it also creates new staffing, supply, and route-management work.
Research remote logistics when one important resource or trade flow justifies a permanent route. Continue with the outpost guide and caravan routes guide.
Choose research by bottleneck
| Current problem | Research category to inspect first | Confirm before committing |
|---|---|---|
| Food stock falls every day | Food production or preservation | Input and cooking labor are available |
| Workers waste time moving items | Storage or logistics | Layout and permissions are already sensible |
| Tools stop multiple jobs | Tool production | Raw material and crafter are ready |
| A required item cannot be produced | Its prerequisite chain | Every intermediate input has a source |
| Progress requires a profession | Specialist technology | Recruit is eligible and supportable |
| Remote gathering consumes the day | Outpost or caravan systems | Route value exceeds its staffing cost |
| Liberation attempt is under-equipped | Combat equipment | Food, replacements, and group gear can scale |
Why research stalls
Check the chain in this order:
- Is the intended technology selected in the Research Desk interface?
- Are all prerequisite technologies complete?
- Is the required material available to the same settlement?
- Is the required profession present where the research occurs?
- Is research enabled and prioritized for that worker?
- Is the worker occupied by another high-priority job?
- Can materials reach the Research Desk?
The current Summer Update also allows clicking technology-tree entries to begin research or navigate to them at the Research Desk, making prerequisite inspection easier.
Research mistakes to avoid
Unlocking several chains at once
Every new building competes for materials, labor, storage, and construction time. Finish and stabilize one chain before opening several more.
Ignoring profession requirements
If a branch requires expertise you cannot recruit yet, choose a useful supporting technology rather than leaving the entire research plan stalled.
Researching above the settlement's supply level
A more advanced workstation will not solve missing inputs. Raise supply capacity first.
Treating a fixed online list as permanent
Bellwright remains in active development. Technology names, costs, prerequisites, and balance can change. Use this guide for decision order and the current game interface for exact values.
A quick pre-research checklist
- What current problem will this unlock solve?
- Can the settlement build the structure after research?
- Are the required worker and profession available?
- Can inputs arrive continuously?
- Is there storage for intermediate and finished goods?
- Will the unlock help the next objective within the next few sessions?
If the last two answers are no, another supporting technology is probably the better first choice.
